Paola Angelini

Paola Angelini (1983) was born in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy, where she still works and lives. Her work is centered around the study of painting by exploring the possibilities of the language within the practice of painting, as well as using it as a tool of research. She gathers inspiration from found and personal images, or historic artworks, where her interest lays on the subject within the image and its composition which becomes both the birth and the core of each of her own works. While the study of the image is where she draws her initial vision, it is the research of the visual language within images which is her objective on her path of exploring the medium of painting. In recent years the space where she situated has become of more importance to her work and will shape and form her painting after she has completed her research process. This can be seen in her works from when she spent three months during the spring and summer of 2014 as an artist-in-residence at the Nordic Artists’ Center (NKD) in Dale, Sunnfjord. Dale is located in striking natural surroundings midway between a fjord and mountains in the Dalsfjorden, in a small rural community with a population of 3,000. Some of her works created at Dale such as Landskapet (Landscape), or Study of Forest shows the influence of her surroundings and is where her practice shifted to portray nature in an increasingly figurative manner, her brushstrokes in these works seek to authentically mimic reality. Angelini´s process of painting is spatial and temporal, where different spaces and time frames coexist within her paintings.

After attending the workshop of Visual Arts at IUAV University in Venice with Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard in 2011, she exhibited in the Norwegian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, in an exhibition entitled Baton Sinister. In 2017 she obtained a Master in Fine Arts at KASK Conservatorium in Gent (BE). Angelini has received various awards, among these was the Level 0 award during Art Verona (2014) selected by Mart Museum of Rovereto. In 2014 and 2016 she participated at the Artist in Residency program at Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale (NKD), Norway, as well as the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa residency in Venice.
