Willibald Storn
Fanget til frihet (Held by Freedom)
For several decades, Willibald Storn has been a significant presence in the Norwegian art scene. Fanget til frihet (Held by Freedom) at Galleri Brandstrup marks the artist’s 90th birthday and brings together a selection of new works in painting and collage.
Storn’s art works are populated by figures, texts, and signs drawn from popular culture and the news cycle. As a member of the artist group GRAS in the 1960s, he took part in events and political actions where art and society were closely intertwined. That connection remains evident in his works today; through his work he continues to articulate a sustained critique of war, power structures, and consumer culture.
Through the use of posters, newspaper fragments, and discarded materials, Storn foregrounds the material traces of economic and social systems. Freedom, in his work, is never presented as pure or absolute, but as something bound to responsibility and consequence.
