March 31, 2016 – Galleri Brandstrup is proud to present “Robert Mapplethorpe”, an exhibition of carefully selected photographs by legendary American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, spanning between 1980 and 1989, the year upon his death. The exhibition includes thirty-two examples of Mapplethorpe's mature production, including his very last self-portrait.
The exhibition is presents carefully crafted and controlled studio images for which the artist became renowned, the selection of works features self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and portraits of Mapplethorpe´s lovers and friends. During the early 1980s, his photographs shifted to emphasize classical formal beauty, concentrating on statuesque male and female nudes, flowers and formal portraits.
“Robert Mapplethorpe” is organized in collaboration with The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. Galleri Brandstrup also wants to thank Sean Kelly Gallery and Turid Meeker Contemporary Art for their cooperation.
